SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR THE THEATRE AUDITION

In order to give students as much time to prepare as possible, this is the information about the performance portion of our audition:
Choosing your monologues

• Choose TWO contrasting one-minute monologues from published plays. This enables the judges to see a range in your acting skills. One monologue should be a contemporary selection and one a classical selection. (Classical defined as plays written before 1910. A classical piece is not mandatory for middle school students.

• Look for pieces that speak to you personally; that excite and interest you.

• Read the entire play that the monologue comes from. Understanding the play enables you to more fully embody the character you’re portraying and helps put the monologue into a larger context.
OPTIONAL: If you also sing, you may prepare 16 bars of a song and sing it immediately following the performance of your monologues. Sing it a cappella (no music) and choose a Broadway show tune.

If you have NOT turned in a SCHOOL OF CHOICE form, YOU MUST do this by 1/31.   http://soco.dpsk12.org/
Download appropriate form on the right hand side.  Fill it out completely.  You should rank DSA as your number one choice in order to be selected to come to DSA.

If you are out of district (living in a non-DPS district, or have not applied to DPS before) you MUST apply to DPS at the time of your callback.

If you are enrolling for the first time in Denver Public Schools, you will need to bring:
• Verification of child's date of birth (birth certificate or other documentation)
• Your child's immunization records
• Proof of your home address (something mailed to your address, such as utility bill or copy of a lease)
• Name and address of your child's previous school (if you are transferring from another school district) so that your child's academic records may be obtained

You should turn all of this in at auditions and we will turn it into the School of Choice office.  THANK YOU

Auditions – a 4 step process

Step 1 – the online audition application

The online audition application will be opened on November 1 and close on November 21 at noon. At any point during this online audition application window, you must apply online.

PLEASE make sure you work yourself through the entire audition application. You will create an account first. That is not the audition application. As soon as you create an account, you will proceed by adding your child’s name, grade, major, etc. Only completed audition applications will be considered for auditions.

At the end of the application there is an option to print a verification report. Print that out and bring it with you to the pre-audition meetings.

If you do not have access to a computer, you may come to DSA during the online application window and someone in the counseling center will help you get online.

Students may apply and audition for one major only.

Note – Stagecraft and Design will be accepting applicants in grades 7-12 only.

Step 2 – the mandatory pre-audition meetings

All audition applicants must attend the pre-audition meetings in order to audition in January.

A parent or an adult parent designee for the applicant must be in attendance in order to move ahead in the audition process. The applicant does not HAVE to attend the meeting but is highly encouraged to do so. Each major will explain, in great detail, the audition process and requirements for their department. At the end of these meetings, your child will be given an audition time slot for January.

Step 3 – the district school of choice form

Beginning in mid December, DPS’s new School Choice form will be available and will need to be filled out by all auditioning students – both in-district and out of district. The DPS School Choice form will ask you to rank your top 5 preferred schools within DPS, including transitional schools, charter schools and magnet programs such as DSA. The DPS School Choice form must be signed and turned into any DPS school – elementary through high school – no later than 5:00 pm on January 31, 2012. If you desire to attend DSA, be sure to indicate DSA as your #1 choice!! For more information about the new School Choice system, please visit http://socodpsk12.org. Do not call DSA with these questions – as we do not monitor or run this choice process.

Step 4 – the audition

You will receive your audition date and time at the pre-audition meetings in November and December. You do not pick the audition date or time. It is chosen for you. The vast majority of our applicants will only be assigned one day. Please keep all dates/times open on your calendar. There are some majors which may require a call back audition. All of call back details will be explained at the pre-audition meetings.

All current 9th – 11th grade students are asked to bring an unofficial copy of their high school transcripts with grades posted through December 2011 in a sealed envelope to auditions. Please hand these to the major teacher – they will in turn hand them to DSA administration. Administration will look at the transcripts to ensure that the student is on track to graduation.

Notification Process

Step 1 – notification date – Feb 17, 2012

All students who audition will be notified by February 17, 2012 as to the outcome of their audition (either qualified to attend DSA or not qualified to attend DSA). If your child receives confirmation that he/she has qualified for DSA, this does not mean that she/she also has an enrollment “offer”. Students will be assigned to DSA based on their qualification status plus the desired school(s) indicated on the DPS School Choice form.

All students will be notified of their 2012/2013 school assignment through a written letter by March 1, 2012. The only students who will be considered for enrollment at DSA will be those who successfully qualify via the DSA audition process AND have ranked DSA on their DPS School Choice form. If you do not select DSA as your 1st preference school, please know that it is possible that your child may not be assigned to DSA. If you have any questions about the new School Choice student matching system, please call the DPS Office of Choice and Enrollment Services at 720-423-3493.

* It is important to know that the letter you receive from DSA on February 17, 2012 is only an offer to attend Denver School of the Arts. You will be matched to DSA by the Office of Choice and Enrollment Services according to your school preference you indicated on your School Choice form. If you did not select DSA as your first choice, you will be placed at your first school choice – not DSA. If you have questions about this process – please contact the Office of Choice and Enrollment Services directly at 720-423-3493. Please do not call DSA about choice questions as DSA does NOT manage this choice match process. We have to work directly with the Office of Choice and Enrollment Services and what you selected on your form in January.

Step 2 – New to DSA Meeting – March 10, 2012

ALL new students are invited to attend the Welcome to DSA Meeting. Please keep this date open in case you are admitted.

9:00 am
Students new to Denver Public Schools or returning to Denver Public Schools

11:00 am
Students already enrolled in a Denver Public School regardless of grade level

All students and parents will hear from the DSA principal in the Concert Hall at the assigned time (above).

New students to DPS or returning students to DPS will pick up registration packets with all necessary documents. There will be cover sheet explaining how to fill out the paperwork and when to turn it in.

The counselors will be in the Schomp Theatre immediately following the Concert Hall sessions for a Q and A for all grade level students.

With your acceptance letter, there will be additional information about this meeting.

Visitation Mornings
October 4, October 13, November 1, November 8, November 17, 2011 for current 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders

Welcome to the Denver School of the Arts Visitation Morning Program

Choosing the right school can be a big decision. We want to help you make the best choice possible. The Visitation Morning Program at Denver School of the Arts offers prospective students and parents the opportunity to spend a morning visiting both academic classes as well as ‘majors’ classes at DSA. The Visitation Mornings are an excellent opportunity for students to ask questions about classes, major requirements and extracurricular activities, etc.

The Visitation Mornings are NOT part of the audition process. Audition questions/information is given during the November and December at the mandatory audition meetings. Look under the Admissions tab on the DSA website (dsa.dpsk12.org) for online application window and the dates/times for the November/December 2011 meetings.

Why don’t we offer Visitation Mornings in the spring? DSA is an audition-only school. The online application window is from November 1 – November 21. The mandatory audition meetings are on Nov 28, 29, 30 and Dec 1. Auditions are held in January. Students will find out their acceptance status at the end of February. There are no Visitation Mornings in the spring since auditions are complete.

There will be five Visitation Mornings this fall: October 4, October 13, November 1, November 8 and November 17. Space is limited to no more than 100 families per visit.

A brief overview of the day
7:20 – 7:35 Arrive at DSA. Students/parents may walk the halls and watch the “DSA life” as our students arrive at school
7:35 – 8:00 Visit with the DSA administration in the Concert Hall
8:00 – 9:30 Students/parents will be split into major groups. Each group will be lead by a parent representative from that major. With the assistance of parent volunteers, you will go and visit academic classrooms as well as the classrooms of the major art forms

How to schedule a Visitation Morning

We will take the first 100 online applications for each day. We ask that families only sign up once – for if you sign up for 2 or 3 days, that is taking away the opportunity from another family. Once you’ve signed up, you’re in. We do not call/email to confirm. We will see you on the day of your Visitation Morning.

Choosing DSA for your middle/high school

If your student is interested in auditioning for the 2012-2013 school year after the Visitation Morning, both parent and student will want to keep an eye on the DSA website under “admissions.” Follow the four step process to audition for the upcoming school year.

Welcome to Denver School of the Arts!
