2012-2013 THEATRE LAB AUDITIONS
lunch in the Movement Studio Feb 15-17
what?
bring 30 seconds of anything you want to share: singing, dancing, acting, juggling playing an instrument, etc.
who?
any major, anyone 9-12 grade
all you need is a passion for performing, an ability to work in an ensemble, and the willingness to take risks, have fun, and work hard
why?
Theatre Lab serves as an outreach tool to the community during the year as well as a place for experimental theatre. We tour around the Denver Metro area, are Superior rated entrants to the State Thespian Conference, and perform at DSA.
But I didn't put Theatre Lab (Drama 2) on my course of studies. NEVER FEAR - administration has said they will enter those listed on the final sheet Mr. Becker submits for the class - so (schedule willing) you will be in!

Theatre Lab Auditions
- Theatre Lab serves a both an outlet to creative exploration of a variety of different theatrical art forms, as well as public relations tool that aims to bring greater exposure of DSA to the surrounding community. The material performed each year will be dictated by the members of the Lab and may include plays, musicals, movement pieces, cabarets, readers theatre…the possibilities are endless.
- Open to all 9th-12th graders
- Around 15-25 students will be selected after auditions April 18-22. Students who are excepted will be those who exhibit willingness to challenge themselves and take risks, be creative, and work as an ensemble to create exciting, dynamic theatrical experiences. Although positions are available for backstage as well as onstage it is understood that all members are part of a team and should be able to take on whatever role is given to them. All Theatre Lab students are required to be members of the International Thespian Society (we will help you qualify if you don’t already). All Theatre Lab students are expected to maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA so that they can tour without concern for academic standing.
- Auditions will be held during lunch April 18-22. Students must e-mail Mr. Becker at brandon_becker@dpsk12.org before April 8 if auditioning. Students will be assigned a date to audition the week of the 18th – if you have certain days you cannot miss lunch please e-mail that with your initial contact.
- On the day of the audition students should meet in the L Studio. Each student will present a 30 second piece that showcases whatever they want: singing, dancing, acting, or any combination of the three. It is recommended that students wear clothes that are easy to move in.
Intermediate Plays
We will celebrate WOMEN playwrights. All three shows will be selected by the directors – Hann/Becker/Guest--TBA.
Studio Series Guest Directed Show
WINTERTIME by Charles Mee and the (re)working project Directed by Allison Watrous
-
Auditions will be in November

- Show dates: January 19-21, 26-28, 2012
- A theatrical carnival of romance, recrimination and cross-purposes, Wintertime is an energetic comedy about the miracle of love. Suffused with intellectual debates that tickle the aesthetic sensibility and romantic encounters that educate and surprise, Mee's cacophonic comedy celebrates love in all its foolish, absurd, and infinitely delightful varieties.
- Wintertime is a new American play that received its world premiere at California's La Jolla Playhouse in the summer of 2002. It is the recipient of eight San Diego Critics Circle awards including 'Outstanding New Play.
- A note from Charles Mee about the (re)making project -"Please feel free to take the plays from this website and use them freely as a resource for your own work: that is to say, don't just make some cuts or rewrite a few passages or re-arrange them or put in a few texts that you like better, but pillage the plays as I have pillaged the structures and contents of the plays of Euripides and Brecht and stuff out of Soap Opera Digest and the evening news and the internet, and build your own, entirely new, piece--and then, please, put your own name to the work that results.”
- The main connection to the year of the woman for me is 5 strong female characters that range from an ingenue to a fleeting middle age lover to wise old women.
- Cast: 5 women 5 men
- Because of Charles Mee's philosophy, his approach to play writing, his extraordinary play, and the remaking project, we will be able to play and discover through the rehearsal process of Wintertime. It is the creative energy that surrounds his work that drew me to this project.
- The auditions will be mid- October. Please prepare one 1 minute comedic monologue and a 30 second piece from the show. If you sing or play an instrument- please incorporate your musical stylings into your audition.
Spring Play: Laughing Stock by Charles Morey Directed by Brandon Becker
-
Comedy 9 men, 5 women: 14 total

- "…a summer stock production of Dracula disintegrates into chaos on opening night. Gothic horror becomes high comedy amid misplaced technical cues, forgotten lines, wrong entrances and eccentric acting…the large audience howled with glee as they watched the mayhem unfold…" —Salt Lake Tribune.
- On the brink of financial ruin, a summer repertory company full of intense artistic personalities wrestle with trying to do the following in a run down, dusty barn: a a gender sensitive version of the classic English comedy Charley's Aunt, a modernistic Hamlet, and an original streamlined version of Dracula. The results are disastrous, hilarious, and even a bit touching. Farce at its finest!
- April 2012 show dates.
- Auditions in Dec/Jan.
Improv Troupe:
- Mr Becker will be starting an Improv Troupe in the fall open to whole school – there will be a MS troupe and an HS troupe.
- Rehearsals would be during lunch
- There will be performances at school as well as tours.
